LIFE SCIENCE STARTUPS IN SOUTHERN NEW ENGLAND - SEPtember 27TH 2018

In September 2018 , the Southern New England Entrepreneurs Forum (SNEEF) will be holding its monthly meeting from 5:30PM to 8:00PM at the Law Offices of Adler Pollock & Sheehan, 1 Citizens Plaza, Providence, RI.

We are going to have a Panel Discussion entitled “The current state of life science startups in Southern New England”.  Biomedical innovation is one of the five most advanced growth areas of the state’s economy, according to the 2016 Brookings Institution study on competitive strategy for Rhode Island.  And this event will be an opportunity to hear from a panel of experts and startup founders about the current landscape, and what’s being done to support entrepreneurs and create a start-up ecosystem right here in our own backyard.

Carol Malysz, M.B.A.

Executive Director of MedMates

Carol Malysz is the Executive Director of MedMates, Rhode Island’s life sciences technology network group.  MedMates’ mission is to grow the life sciences economy in Rhode Island by attracting, bringing together and advocating for talent and resources to support the life sciences community throughout southeastern New England. Founded in 2013, MedMates members have deep experience in the fast-changing life science fields, ranging from startups to mature companies to everything in between.

Carol's long history of supporting Rhode Island entrepreneurs include her experiences with: the Center for Women & Enterprise (CWE) Rhode Island,  the Association of Women’s Business Centers, the Business Expansion Division at the Rhode Island Economic Development Corporation, and BusinessFirst - an online collaboration of 17 RI service provider organizations that streamlined the delivery of business development assistance to RI small businesses.

Meg Wirth

SEG Healthness & Wellness Initiative Director

As Director for SEG’s Health and Wellness initiative, Meg runs the business Accelerator for social enterprises focused on public health, wellness and medical innovation. She is also responsible for building partnerships with industry, universities and government interested in leveraging the power of social business for population health in Rhode Island and beyond.

Meg co-founded and launched a social enterprise called Maternova Inc., a pioneering global ecommerce platform for women’s health technologies. In prior roles she has mentored and consulted with dozens of social enterprises, worked at the Rockefeller Foundation on global health equity and secured a Gates Foundation grant to start a global health venture fund. Prior work in public health ranges from safe motherhood programs in Borneo to outreach to teen mothers in the Appalachian region of Eastern Kentucky. She has an undergraduate degree from Harvard University in visual and environmental studies and a Master’s degree in international development from Princeton’s Woodrow Wilson School.

Dr. Andrew Mallon

MassChallenge Rhode Island - Program Director

Dr Andrew Mallon founded Calista Therapeutics in 2012 based upon the discovery and development of a technology platform of therapeutics that modulate the cellular transport, location and activation of regulatory proteins. Dr Mallon is a biotech entrepreneur, specializing in the identification and creation of early stage value in promising therapeutics in diseases that have high unmet clinical need and de-risked development pathways.

Previously Dr Mallon founded Ardane Therapeutics, Inc. (USA), and Carlton Pharmaceutics (UK). Dr Mallon is an inventor on several patents based upon his discoveries in addition to several publications. Dr Mallon has a Ph.D. from the University of Glasgow, taught and undertook research at Brown University and is a registered pharmacist. Dr Mallon has served as an expert scientific reviewer for both the NIH and NSF grant committees focused upon drug development.

Dr. Mike Morency (Moderator)

Dr. Morency has over 20 years of legal practice with general corporate law firms, primarily in the life science industry. He holds a B.Sc. in Life Sciences, a Ph.D. in Medical Science – Neuroscience, and a J.D. in Common Law, providing him with a very strong educational background to represent life science companies. He has represented every segment of the life science industry, from early stage companies to large multi-national biopharmaceutical companies, as well as universities, and non-profit organizations.

Dr. Morency advises clients on the creation and development of cost-effective, strategic intellectual property (IP) portfolios. He also provides counseling to life science companies in patent interference, post-grant reviews, intellectual property enforcement, and litigation issues, as well as preparing patent invalidity, freedom to operate and non-infringement opinions.

In addition to the creation and management of IP portfolios and related counseling, Dr. Morency has extensive experience in the commercialization of IP. This extensive experience representing large biopharmaceutical companies, investors, and underwriters provides Dr. Morency with a unique insight on creating IP portfolios that meet and exceeds the industry expectations, which enhances the technology’s valuation.
